Comfort food, a phrase used to describe a pattern of eating associated with stress. As per the story titled “Sad Child May Overeat,” first published in a paper called the Palm Beach Post in 1966. “Adults, when under severe emotional stress, turn to what could be called ‘comfort food’—food associated with the security of childhood, like mother’s poached egg or famous chicken soup.”
Home-cooked meals mean comfort food then. As Merriam-Webster, also, put it, “food prepared in a traditional style having a usually nostalgic, or sentimental appeal.” Yet not all comfort food is home-made. Sometimes, it’s from a café, or restaurant, or even fast-food. Yes, like a Ratatouille moment.
Its Urban definition would be, “as food that gives emotional comfort to the one eating it. These tend to be favorite foods of childhood, or linked to a person, place, or time with which the food has a positive association.”
Now more than ever, we crave any form of solace. Most of us turn to our kitchens and cook ourselves through quarantine. Food orders come in handy too.
Here are our family’s favs before and during the quarantine.
From a 24-hr dinner serving crazy good silogs before the community quarantine, it’s now a curbside restaurant for pick-up or delivery. Owned by a family friend, yet there’s no bias when I say they have the BEST tapa. It’s so tender, which is the deal-breaker for me. And flavorful with all the curing the beef meat goes under. Ma-loka sa sarap kesa sa balita with NKKLK Tapsi, at 1764 N. Garcia Street, Makati City. Delivery thru Grab Food, Foodpanda and Lalafood.
Candy’s Deli Hibok-hibok
Old favorites come alive again now especially, sticky rice cakes. In my humble hometown of Taytay, we got hibok-hibok, gooey balls of glutinous rice with fillings submerged in creamy coconut milk then topped with coconut scum. To date, the filling may be red mung bean (monggo), purple yam (ube) with macapuno, and coconut scum (latik). These treats are made-to-order online by my sister’s friend at 45 Downhill St. Tower Hills Subdivision, Taytay, Rizal.
Consuelo’s Artisan Cakes
And sweets for my sweet, even in quarantine. From a former culinary instructor at my alma mater to home baking, Maria Consuelo or Icon has the desserts to crave for. Consuelo’s desserts, especially her cakes, are so good it earned wards at the Ultimate Taste Test in 2018 and 2019. One of her winning creations is an ube filled dream cake, ube chiffon cake with pastillas custard and ube halaya filling topped with ube whipped cream. Pick-up a box or two of these heavenly treats at their HQ, Phase 5, 11 Mayflower St, Cor Buenmar Ave, Greenland Village, Cainta, Rizal or at selected Shell Deli2Go.
