Sparkles of Hope By Lighting It Forward

Under the bleak Manila sky, light champions, and challengers, shine brightly amidst the pandemic crisis.

“The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to rethink how to move forward with our mission of bringing light and hope to the 20 million Filipinos who are still living in darkness.”

Illac Diaz, Founder and Executive Director of Liter of Light

Liter of Light, a Filipino-born global grassroots solar lighting movement, has launched an enlightening campaign despite the lockdowns. Motivated by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the Light it Forward campaign invites ordinary people to do extraordinary things. By accepting the challenge, one will receive a kit to build a solar light. Then follow the manual & video tutorial made by the Liter of Light team. Each kit assembly takes only about 20 – 30 mins but yields around five years of use. Thereon, one can dedicate their light to an essential/frontline worker that has impacted them during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then one must challenge their colleagues, friends, and or family to build a light.

As of writing, the campaign has counted on the support of over 120 celebrities, influencers, and artists, with an estimated total fan base of 30 million supporters. Uniting artists, the media, businesses, and service groups to change the world from home, LIGHT IT FORWARD is a platform to pay tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of essential workers and front-liners who are protecting the public during this unprecedented time. The actual solar lights are then to be donated to energy-poor villages in the Philippines. Like the ones I’ve been to in San Mateo, Rizal, and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, as a volunteer.

The campaign is part of a broader strategy for Liter of Light, the official Philippine private sector representative to the upcoming World EXPO, which will take place in Dubai from October 2021 to March 2022. The organization will use its platform to shine a light on how Filipino “malasakit” is paving a way for a brighter future in a tangible, measurable way.
